East African Family Holidays
While really only scratching the surface of the endless options for the perfect family safari in Southern Africa last week, it's important to remember that a safari through East Africa is just as captivating.
Traveling as a family through this region exposes one to so many treasures that are ideal to experience together. Giraffes join for breakfast in Nairobi; visit a remote local school and village of the Masai people; tour organic gardens and try your hand at milking cows on a farm on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater; enjoy the thrill of tented camps in the middle of the Mara and safari drives to explore the amazing wildlife in these areas.

FOR THE LITTLIES
The stately Giraffe Manor in the suburb of Karen, Nairobi, is a great introduction to this trip. Spend a fun morning feeding the endangered Rothschild giraffes who are part of the sanctuary on property and learn the life stories of the rescued elephants at the David Sheldrick Centre, where you can connect with and adopt these majestic animals, promising them a safe and happy life. Sala's Camp, within the iconic Masai Mara game reserve, takes prime location at the convergence of two rivers attracting an array of wildlife making for great game viewing. The camp welcomes children and offers fun adventures fit for the whole family.
TANZANIA - 4 NIGHTS ON A WORKING FARM
An idyllic farmhouse located on the forested slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Gibbs Farm is situated on a picturesque coffee estate just outside the town of Karatu. The gracious and sprawling colonial homestead is set amongst English-style gardens. While coffee is still grown, processed and roasted on the farm, a vast fruit and vegetable garden provides almost all of the fresh produce used in the wholesome, delicious meals. The adventurous are encouraged to cycle through Karatu with their guide and spend time at the local school.
KENYA - 4 NIGHTS WITH THE LOCAL SAMBURU
Situated above the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, in the arid heart of Samburu land, Sasaab’s tranquil setting offers views towards the Laikipia plateau and of Mount Kenya. Amidst a community conservancy, rich in raw Samburu culture and traditions, the lodge was built with wildlife conservation and preservation of the environment foremost in mind. It's a safari with a difference where guided walks and drives are complimented by camel back safaris and quad biking. For the adventurous, a fly-camping sleep out is a must and will be remembered for the rest of time.
TANZANIA - 4 NIGHTS ON A PRIVATE ISLAND
White sand beaches, sparkling waters, a flourishing marine world surrounding you and a team of hosts looking after your every whim – Thanda Island, located between Tanzania’s mainland and Mafia Island, offers complete privacy and exudes intimacy and adventure. With only the sun and the moon guiding you through the days, this is a place where time seems to stand still. Swimming with Whale Sharks (seasonally), snorkelling, deep-sea fishing, sailing on a traditional wooden dhow, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding are just some of the adventures awaiting.
